Victor Solomon & Merrick Adams
Welcome to Adele Delivers, where I deliver two of my favorite contemporary artists right to your inbox every Friday. Here’s to fostering a deeper connection with art, one artist at a time.
Victor Solomon
Victor Solomon studied as a filmmaker and that’s the career that brought him from Boston to San Francisco where he became interested in the stained glass of local architecture. This spark proved to be a game-changer for Victor. He posted his first stained glass hoop to Instagram in 2015 and hasn’t looked back, his recent claim to fame, redesigning the trophies for the NBA All-Star Games. A baller since childhood, Victor now considers basketball a sacred practice and a potent platform for unification and healing in his artwork. Victor’s legacy goes to show it’s never too late to get in the game and start something new. Learn more about Victor here.
Merrick Adams
Merrick Adams uses nets to make paintings of the sea. He’s inspired by Alfred Korzybski’s idea that "a map is not the territory it represents...” While Merrick considers his work a map of the sea’s surface he knows he can only offer a simplified representation of the vast complexity of the sea. This parallels the reductionist technique in his painting process, where he removes paint from the canvas by pulling away netting, revealing layers of paint underneath. Net is also a symbol for the pattern that connects us all as well as a symbol of Merrick’s fisherman heritage. Learn more about Merrick here.
Detail
There was a bar in the Mission with these words emblazoned across the front, “Have you called your mother lately?” Well, have you? Have an incredible weekend. See you next week with more art.
