Paul Anthony Smith & Quinci Baker

Happy Black History Month and welcome to Adele Delivers, where I deliver two of my favorite contemporary artists right to your inbox every Friday. This month I’m focussing on Black artists. Here’s to fostering a deeper connection with art, one artist at a time. If the spirit moves you, forward this art delivery to a friend.

Paul Anthony Smith

Paul uses the physicality of the fence, sometimes painted, sometimes made by poking tiny holes, always heavy on the mind and heart, to address challenges related to broader themes such as before and after, old world versus new, belonging versus not, the African Diaspora, double consciousness, confusion caused by colonialism, and dreams deferred. Quinci Baker

Quinci Baker uses different craft techniques and repurposed materials to explore collective memory, loss, and imagination. In this series, she uses pony beads as a memory aid that describes her cultural identity. In Quinci’s words, “I love working with beads for many reasons, one of which is their ability to speak to a collective because of their pixelated quality. They directly reference parts to a whole. I'm asserting ancestors as the collective within the self and acknowledging the meditative practice of working within a craft lineage that runs through my blood.” Learn more about Quinci here.

Thank you for being here! Wishing you lots of rainbows this weekend, send me a pic if you catch one- it’s my birthday this weekend after all 🎉 Before I head out to celebrate, here’s a message from Tony Robbins about giving that’s been on my mind lately.

I want people to be inspired to do what's in front of them. If you won't give a dime out of a dollar, don't talk to a billionaire about giving their money away because if you don't give a dime out of a dollar, I can promise you, you're not going to give a 100 million out of a billion. It's a lie.
