Charles Gaines & Mizuno Rina

Welcome to Adele Delivers, where I deliver two of my favorite contemporary artists right to your inbox each Friday. Hereā€™s to fostering a deeper connection with art, one artist at a time.

Charles Gaines

Charlesā€™ work demonstrates the systems controlling our ideas. In his words, "I was in a painting program, and I discovered that the whole process of painting didn't hold much meaning for me. There was an overwhelming sense that the whole thing was arbitrary. There was a perceived idea that a work of art was made from your imagination and from your intuition. I do believe that there is such a thing as intuition and there is a such thing as the imagination. I just think these are concepts that are culturally realized. What we come to understand as knowledge and meaning are not pure products of our genius, but are built into the structure where we reside." Learn more about Charles here ā¬‡ļø.

Mizuno Rina

Rina layers Middle Eastern miniatures with traditional Japanese ink brushstrokes to create seemingly infinite optical illusions. With multiple focal points there are countless places for your eyes to land. The vivid gradients and repetition of ancient patterns take you to a world thatā€™s familiar and personal ā€” like a sacred place youā€™ve been to before, a place thatā€™s both light years away and inside you. Bedtime Inspo: I made this Lullaby Mix for my kids. Some nights we read a book, some nights we sing and some nights we pick 3 songs from this playlist to fall asleep to.

Everything changes once we identify with being the witness to the story, instead of the actor in it.
