Memo Akten & Anya Paintsil

If we don't use technology to see things differently, we're wasting it.

Welcome to Adele Delivers, where I deliver two of my favorite contemporary artists right to your inbox. Here’s to fostering a deeper connection with art, one artist at a time.

Memo Akten

In Memo’s latest work, Boundaries, AI transcends its usual form as wonky text (that doesn’t know how many r's are in the word "strawberry"), data sets, robotic machines, or simple assistants for computer tasks. Instead, it manifests as beautiful, fluid images of fabric, dancers, and galaxies, presenting a vision of AI that feels spiritual and personal to us humans. Learn more about Memo here.

Anya Paintsil

This year, for the first time, “Multi-racial American” was a checkbox on a form I filled out and it made me so happy. In the past, my only option was “Other.” Anya’s weaving, inspired by Welsh folklore and African hairstyling methods, embodies the emotional complexity of being categorized as “other.” As she puts it, “My work … is a physical representation of depersonalization and loss of individual identity. Growing up, I was often confused with the few other girls of color around, regardless of our racial differences, height, and varied physical appearances. We were all just ‘not white,’ other, and therefore all the same.” Learn more about Anya here.

More from Memo. I love how this video uses machine learning to show how everything is connected. Gloomy Sunday, Learning to see.

I’ve watched this video three times this week. Is your dead grandmother still alive? with theoretical physicist and philosopher of science, Sabine Hossenfelder

Partiful is a free, new-to-me invitation app, think Paperless Post meets Facebook Events. I’ve received a couple of invites from here via text - all the info I need with playful bells and whistles like confetti, emojis and polls. I can’t wait to use Partiful for my next event. Thanks, Chris Saad.
