Su Yu-Xin & Yvette Mayorga

08.02.2024

Welcome to Adele Delivers, where I deliver two of my favorite contemporary artists right to your inbox every Friday. Hereā€™s to fostering a deeper connection with art, one artist at a time.

Su Yu-Xin 苏äŗˆę˜•

Yu-Xin is interested in the history and evolution of pigments. She collects and studies raw materials from site visits, makes her own paint and uses it to illustrate the landscape from which they came. For Yu-Xin, painting is a way to reorder and reinterpret natural and synthetic elements, turning her painting practice into geological exploration. Learn more about Yu-Xin here.

Ferric oxide, soil, carmine lake, sulfur, lazurite pigment, crystal dust, titanium dioxide and other hand-made pigments

Oil, synthetic mauveine, soil, carmine lake and handmade pigment and pastel on flax

Black volcano rocks. California ochre and soil, various shades of iwa-enogu and other hand made pigments

Yvette Mayorga

Yvetteā€™s pink frosting draws you in to tell a story of her girlhood as a 1st generation Mexican-American. In this series, she thinks about three things, 1. ā€œAttaining American-nessā€, fitting in by buying things, showing you not only the Polly Pocket she always wanted but the decadent multilevel home inside. 2. She thinks about gendered labor, specifically cake decorating and how itā€™s treated as ā€œwomenā€™s workā€ and undervalued as such, also honoring her mom who worked as a baker. 3. She also thinks about domestic spaces and how not everyone feels safe at home, considering government surveillance of peopleā€™s homes and ICE raids- symbolized by large eyes and tiny mirrors. Learn more about Yvette here.

Up for more art criticism? I love this essay by Blake Gopnik about the late great Ray Francis, ā€œRay Francis, Celebrating Blacknessā€

My favorite voice recording app is Otter. It not only records, it creates a summary and lists action items from the remarkably accurate transcript. The free version is all I need to collect my thoughts when Iā€™m driving.

Norah Jones has a new album, Visions, and itā€™s sooooo good. Watch her perform Paradise (my kidsā€™ favorite song) at her TDC or listen here.

Thank you for being here! Iā€™ll be back August 23 with more art. Till soon. XxA
